As a songwriter, I love bringing characters to life through music, and "Howling Rahne" is my tribute to one of the most complex and underrated X-Men characters, Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair). Rahne’s story, with its blend of vulnerability, inner turmoil, and strength, is something I’ve always admired. This song is a way to give voice to her struggles, to honor her journey, and to explore the depths of a character who’s often misunderstood.
The song begins with “Born in shadows, raised in fear, Scotland's hills, where no one hears,” capturing Rahne’s difficult upbringing. Born in a small, religiously strict village in Scotland, Rahne was taught to fear the wolf inside her. The conflict between her faith and her mutant abilities creates a constant battle within her, one that she’s forced to fight both internally and externally. In the verses, I wanted to express that tension—the wolf inside, a heart in chains—and the struggle to break free from both her own fears and the prejudices of the world around her.
The chorus, “Rahne, Rahne, can ye hear the cry, in the dark, ye learn to fly,” is about Rahne coming to terms with who she is. For so long, she fought against her true nature, but as she grows, she learns that the very thing she’s feared—her ability to transform into a wolf—can also be her greatest strength. It’s a tribute to her journey of self-acceptance, a reminder that we all have our battles to fight, but there’s power in embracing who we truly are.
In the second verse, “Friends beside, a team to trust,” I wanted to highlight how Rahne found a new family with the X-Men. Though she’s still haunted by her past, her friendships give her the strength to fight, not just for herself but for others. Her dual nature—both human and wolf—becomes an asset, even as she continues to wrestle with the deeper issues of faith and identity.
The bridge, “Howlin' winds, the moon's embrace, in the shadows, she'll find her place,” reflects Rahne’s ultimate acceptance of her true self. In the moonlight, where the wolf and woman merge, Rahne discovers the strength to rise above her fears. It’s in these moments of darkness that she finds her light, breaking through the shadows of her past to emerge stronger.
"Howling Rahne" is not just a tribute to a beloved character, but also a reminder that, like Rahne, we all have struggles that can feel overwhelming. But there’s power in acknowledging our inner battles, and in those moments of self-realization, we find the strength to break free. This song is for all the Rahne Sinclairs out there, fighting to embrace who they truly are, despite the challenges they face.
